surefire-vector-logo.png

SureFire, LLC, manufacturer of the world’s finest—and most innovative—illumination tools and tactical products, has launched an informational video on its revolutionary Optimized Bolt Carrier (OBC).

The SureFire OBC is designed to greatly increase the reliability of an M4/M16/AR variant during both unsuppressed and suppressed firing. The OBC comes as a package with the OBC bolt carrer group as well as buffer and buffer spring. This patented design makes numerous improvements to the standard Mil-Spec full-auto bolt carrier group starting with delayed unlocking of the bolt during the firing sequence. This delayed unlocking is a result of a lengthened cam pin slot and our neutrally balanced counterweight. This delay allows expanding gases more time to exit the bore, lowering chamber pressure by 15%, which not only reduces wear and tear on parts, but also reduces back-pressure gases exiting the ejection port.

Next the shortened gas carrier key in conjunction with shorter buffer allow a 60% increase in stroke. This increase in stroke gives the magazine more time to feed, which can be essential as gas ports erode and magazines become dirty from austere environments. This additional stroke also provides smoother and more reliable feeding due to increased inertia when the OBC picks up a round from the magazine.

The previously mentioned neutrally balanced counterweight works three times in the cycle of operation. First the counterweight delays unlocking, as mentioned before. Secondly, the counterweight keeps the carrier group to the rear for additional time, allowing more time for reliable feeding of ammunition from the magazine and nearly eliminating bolt-over-base malfunctions. Lastly, this counterweight improves carrier and barrel extension lock-up, nearly eliminating bolt bounce. The OBC also reduces felt recoil, allowing for better tracking of sights and more control of the weapon when firing. Coated with an advanced anti-friction coating, the OBC resists friction during use and makes cleaning easy. For the ultimate in reliability, choose the SureFire OBC.

About SureFire—Located in Fountain Valley, California, SureFire, LLC is the leading manufacturer of suppressors, high-performance flashlights, weapon-mounted lights and other tactical equipment for those who go in harm’s way, or anyone who demands the ultimate in quality, innovation, and performance. SureFire illumination tools are used by more SWAT teams and elite special operations forces than any other brand. SureFire is an ISO 9001:2008-certified company.

CMP-Shotgun-Team-Ranks-Among-World’s-Best-at-English-Sporting-Championship-2.jpg

HAINESVILLE, Ill. – On Aug. 6, 2019, the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Shotgun Team traveled to the Northbrook Sports Club in Hainesville, Ill., to take part in the 2019 World English Sporting Championship.

The World English is the second biggest shotgun shoot in the world each year, behind the World FITASC (international sporting clays). A tournament that is alternately held annually in Europe or the United States, this year’s World English event, which ran from Aug. 5-11, attracted over 1,100 shooters from all across the globe for a three course, three-day championship and a 200 target, 8 parcour New-style FITASC event.

CMP shotgun team members are Tyler Smith, Brent Segraves, Steve Dickinson, Chip Welch and Matt Lockridge – all from local areas of Alabama such as Talladega, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Though all have over 10 years of experience in the shotgun world, Lockridge has been on the CMP team for five years, Smith and Dickinson for two, and Welch and Segraves are in their first year.

The 2019 World English was only the second in the United States held outside of the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas, and the first held in Illinois. Featured events included:

200 Target World English Main Event
200 Target New-style Kolar FITASC Challenge
100 Target 5-Stand
100 Prelim
50 Target 20 Gauge
50 Target 28 Gauge
100 Target Sub – 12/20/28 Gauge, 410 Bore
100 Target Side-by-Side and Pump Gun
CMP’s Tyler Smith performed well in Illinois, finishing in second in the 20 gauge event.

“The targets were very hard – the hardest we’ve shot all year,” said Smith. “It’s the World Championship, so that was to be expected. The team shot great, considering the talent that was there. Once again, I and the rest of the team would like to thank CMP for sending us to these shoots each year to compete and bring awareness about CMP.”

The talented members of Team CMP finished in the following places during the Championship:

Tyler Smith – Main Event, T-11; Prelim, 7; 12ga, 10; 20ga, Runner Up
Chip Welch – Main Event, T-8; 5-Stand, T-10; 12ga, 13; 28ga, 4.
Steve Dickinson – Main Event, 16
Matt Lockridge – 12ga, 9
Throughout the year, team members serve as ambassadors of CMP as well as the sport of shotgun by competing in numerous tournaments, including the U.S. Open in New Jersey, Georgia State Championship and the South Central Regional in Jackson, Miss. The men also regularly appear at CMP’s shotgun areas within Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama.

“One of our mission statements here at CMP is youth shooting programs. This year, the team has brought in just south of 500 youth shooters to the park for tournaments,” said Smith.

He went on to say, “We host 100’s of events a year here on shotgun thanks to the team members representing CMP every day when they come in contact with someone. We are very thankful to be a part of the CMP family and appreciate everyone’s hard work to help the team each year!”

Next up, the National Championship in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 19-27. Congratulations to Team CMP on their success!

Deer Herd at Monocacy Battlefield by Jan Branscome

Maryland hunters reported taking 34,412 deer during the state’s most popular hunt, the two-week firearm season. The total was similar to last year’s official harvest of 35,002.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reported that more than 4,000 deer were taken on the two Sundays during the season, more than 10 percent of the total take during the two week season.

“Deer hunters enjoyed good weather for most of the two weeks and produced a very respectable firearm harvest,” Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. “We are pleased to see hunters use the opportunity to hunt on Sunday in those select counties where the option is available.”

Hunters reported taking 21,661 antlerless deer during the season, down 3 percent from last year’s official total of 22,381. The antlered harvest increased slightly from 12,621 last year to 12,751 this year. Sika deer represented 423 of the total antlered harvest and 478 of the total antlerless harvest.

In western Maryland (Region A), hunters reported taking 4,478 white-tailed deer, an 11 percent increase from last year’s harvest of 4,018. The region’s harvest was comprised of 2,962 antlered and 1,516 antlerless deer. In the remainder of the state (Region B), the white-tailed deer harvest decreased 3 percent year-over-year from 30,984 to 29,934 this year. The region’s total included 9,789 antlered and 20,145 antlerless deer.

The harvest fell sharply in portions of several counties on the Eastern Shore, including Caroline, Dorchester and Talbot, perhaps due to an outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, a naturally-occurring disease among white-tailed deer. The virus is carried by biting midges and can spread quickly through localized deer populations. The deer population is expected to rebound quickly in this area.
